THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE AND
FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUES
Our therapeutic exercise and functional therapy programs
at Scarborough Physical Therapy Associates generally relate to one of
these three categories:
PAIN RELIEF
Many forms of pain, from orthopedic and other causes have a
muscular or orthopedic origin. Often, rest and immobility is not
enough. A therapy program designed specifically to correct the
underlying cause of the problem is necessary.
REHABILITATION & RECOVERY
At Scarborough Physical Therapy Associates we use Kinesion
Taping methods, specific muscle strengthening and stretching, gait and
balance reeducation, and many more modalities to insure that full
function is attained.
WORK-RELATED INJURY AND PREVENTION
To enhance performance and recover from injury, Scarborough
Physical Therapy Associates addresses movement and postural patterns
that may contribute to injury or biomechanical strain.
SOME OF THE THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE AND FUNCTIONAL
THERAPIES THAT WE PROVIDE ARE:

- Orthopaedic & Sports Rehabilitation Customized treatment plans are developed using equipment and diagnostic tools to help
patients quickly reduce symptoms and effectively regain their strength and flexibility.
- Golf-Specific RehabilitationOur Golf Evaluation and Rehabilitation Program includes a musculoskeletal evaluation and a
biomechanical analysis of the golf swing motion to increase strength, body awareness, flexibility, coordination, and accuracy.
- Kinesio TapingŪKinesio
TapingŪ was developed in the 1970s and is used widely today. It is a safe, effective modality which has twenty-four hour
therapeutic benefits, including the facilitation of lymph flow, alleviation of pain and increased circulation and support.
The process entails taping over and around an affected area in order to provide support and
prevent overcontraction of the muscle. Taping allows the patient to maintain full range of motion, thus enabling participation in
physical activity without overuse. Kinesio Tape lifts the skin, causing an increased interstitial space, which in turn, takes the pressure off of the neuro and sensory receptors, thus elleviating pain.
- Therapeutic Exercise There are numerous methods and phases
of exercise which relate to bodily movement, either to correct an impairment,
improve musculoskeletal function, or maintain a state of well-being. Your
physical therapist will select, prescribe, and implement appropriate exercise
activities such as: gym program and a home-based program.
- Work-Related Injury Rehabilitation Customized treatment plans are developed using equipment and
diagnostic tools to help patients quickly reduce symptoms and return to work.
- Neuromuscular Reeducation This treatment helps patients to relearn lost movement tasks which may be related to early
movement patterns, stress or injury.
Postural biomechanics, gait, and balance training are stressed.
- Work Conditioning Creating a unique program which strengthens and simulates the work-related
activity that moves patients safely and effectively to their previous functioning
levels. Early intervention with physical therapy will optimize healing.
- Postural Assessment Postural dysfunction can be the result
of faulty biomechanics, previous injury, or other. Common postural
problems underlie many neck and back conditions.
- Dynamic CORE Stabilization This therapy focuses on strengthening muscles of the abdomen and back which prove
to be effective in improving postural alignment and body mechanics used in activities of daily living, sports, etc.
